Get to know First Shirt Master Sgt. Taylor Wellborn, the first sergeant for the 117th Intelligence Squadron (IS)!

Wellborn began his military career in July 2005 as a signals analyst within the 117 IS, where he has remained ever since. He was selected as the first sergeant for the 117 IS upon promotion to master sergeant in May 2021.

“It wasn’t necessarily something on my roadmap, but it just felt like such a natural progression,” said Wellborn. “I love working hand-in-hand with people and I love being the person that people call when they need help, whether it’s good, bad or whatever.”

Wellborn said that the transition to first sergeant seemed as if it was prepared for him since he was already fulfilling some similar duties while part of the IS’s command support staff.

“Part of something that we always talk about, is that we want to leave the squadron better than we found it. Even though we joined so long ago, not that it was bad, but we always want to leave something better than we found it,” said Wellborn. “I want to try to make a positive impact on as many people as possible, help people achieve their goals, and support them in a venture they are a part of.”

He said that the feeling he gets from others seeing him as someone they can turn to when they need help is both his favorite aspect of being a first sergeant and also his “why.”

“I love being the person to guide someone along, supporting the highs, lows and all the in-betweens, and getting to celebrate people when they get the promotion or job that they wanted,” Wellborn said. “All those parts of the job, any way of supporting people to do better and be a better version of themselves. All of that cheesiness, I love it.”
