    117th Air Refueling Wing

This month’s Unit Spotlight is Combat Crew Communications (Combat Crew Comm), a part of the 117th Operation Support Squadron!

Combat Crew Comm is a small shop tucked away in a vault, or sensitive compartmented information facility (SCIF). Master Sgt. Kyron Jones has been part of the 117th Air Refueling Wing (ARW) since 1999. He has been in the Combat Crew Comm shop since October of 2013, and took over as the shop chief in December of 2021.

“This job is one of the smallest careers fields in the Air Force. It is less than 350 personnel for the Active, Guard and Reserve in total. We as Guard members are in the job as our primary job, but in Active Duty it is only a temporary job. “They come in, do the job and then they go back to do communications stuff,” Jones said. “We are a small career field. All the Tanker Guard bases at the minimum have two full-time technicians. So, if you look at that there are 34 Tanker units, you only have 67 or 68 full-timers.”

Technical training is held at Keesler AFB, Miss., over the course of three months. After completing technical training, members return to their units and begin to learn the different levels of proficiency that come with the job.
