Kathleen Kavalec, the U.S. Ambassador to Romania, visited Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, Romania, on April 17, 2024, to support the Romanian government's efforts to modernize and strengthen its defense capabilities. This visit highlighted the U.S. commitment to ensuring Romania's security and defense readiness.

"I have had the opportunity to see what is being done here at the base, which I should note hosts a large contingent of American forces, the largest contingent here in Romania, and they are being hosted with great warmth and support by Romanian hosts," said Kavalec.

MKAB houses the largest U.S. military presence in Romania and is a symbol of the U.S. commitment to Romania and NATO security. The presence of U.S. forces at the air base demonstrates the tangible support and solidarity between the two nations.

As fellow democracies, the United States and Romania are profoundly committed to democratic values, the rule of law, prosperity, and peace. This shared commitment strengthens partnerships and serves as a beacon of stability in the region, fostering a sense of security and trust among allies.

"The visit comes at a time when Romania celebrated its 20th anniversary of NATO membership, which reiterates our dedication to NATO in that we are stronger together," said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Brian C. Fiddermon, the commander of Army Support Activity-Black Sea. "The U.S. Ambassador's visit to MKAB highlights the strategic partnership between U.S. and Romanian forces in the Black Sea Region and is a testament to the U.S. commitment and its enduring presence in Romania."

As NATO members, both countries stand united in collective defense and security. This alliance strengthens and guarantees mutual support in times of need.

"I think as NATO partners and allies, we are stronger when we work together, and I have had the opportunity to see how well we work together here in this space today," said Kavalec. "I also want to congratulate Romania on 20 years in NATO alone."

Kavalec's visit reflected the ongoing efforts to strengthen bonds within NATO. The U.S. and Romania continue collaborating closely within the alliance, addressing shared security challenges and enhancing regional stability.
