Aerospace Ground Equipment subject matter experts conducted joint training with their Philippine Air Force counterparts during Cope Thunder Philippines 24-1 at Basa Air Base, Philippines, April 12, 2024.
During this training, U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Ethan Stepp, 35th Maintenance Squadron aerospace ground equipment section chief, explained how their office conducts equipment inspections and then inspected the PAF’s equipment.
“Today, we went over every type of inspection we conduct, from washing to special and annual inspections,” Stepp said. We also got with them to show them how to build an inspection schedule that they can maintain for the rest of the year.”
Joint exercises facilitate improved interoperability with the Armed Forces of the Philippines, enabling effective cooperation in times of crisis. Combined training also includes preparations for humanitarian assistance and disaster response.
“The training is very informative for us,” said PAF 1st Lt. Karl Santos, Aircraft and Propulsion Support leader. We’re learning about the differences between both organizations and our processes. This training is very beneficial for identifying our differences so we can get references on both sides to improve the maintenance capabilities on both sides.”
Through our exercise events and shared challenges, we enhance our capability to collaborate effectively, working shoulder-to-shoulder to protect Philippine interests and support local populations.
“We shared our ingenuity with the U.S. to show how we operate safely and efficiently with few people,” Santos said. Learning how to work with the U.S. while being different helps us become stronger allies.”
The benefits of conducting bilateral training during Cope Thunder extend beyond providing essential training. Cope Thunder 24-1 enables our forces to collaborate and enhance interoperability.
“You learn so much from all these TDYs and types of exercises, as you get to pass on your information and get some back in return,” Stepp added. “Having allies out here working together makes us both better and benefits our future operations with them.”
