CAMP ATTEBURY JOINT MANEUVER TRAINING CENTER, Ind. - The leadership of Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment of the Installation Support Unit at Camp Atterbury changed hands yesterday, March 15, in a ceremony at the Virtual Simulation Center here.
Capt. Matthew L. McGowen officially assumed command of HHD ISU after serving as the Family Morale Welfare and Recreation director on Camp Atterbury.
With his history at Camp Atterbury, McGowen said the transition should go smoothly.
"As the FMWR director, I've gotten to know a lot of the different areas, I'm already pretty familiar with everybody," said McGowen. "Since I've already worked with most of these folks, it will make the transition easier."
McGowen said he had an understanding of the jobs Soldiers perform here through this interaction. He also said that customer service was important, bringing a unique perspective to the position of commander.
"As FMWR director I'm used to doing things that help take care of the Soldier. I think that will help me focus on the welfare of the Soldiers, since I already had that mindset," said McGowen.
A new commander isn't the only change in leadership at HHD ISU. In January, 1st Sgt. Jeffrey Stevens became the unit's top non-commissioned officer. Stevens said McGowen was easy to work with.
"He is very knowledgeable and committed to maintaining Army standards," said Stevens. "Every command makes its own climate. I expect to see a user-friendly command team focused on customer service, yet not making compromises in standards," he said.
McGowen takes over from Capt. Andrew T. Miller, who is going on to serve in the Directorate of Logistics as the deputy installation transportation officer.
