Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Petty Officer David Brett serves his country as a reserve Sailor in the United States Navy. Enlisting into the Reserves at age 32, for the past five years Brett has embodied the spirit of service by supporting the Navy and his community. When not on duty he serves as an emergency medical service (EMS) provider while raising two children with his wife at his home in Morristown, New Jersey.

“It’s kind of along the same lines, but a little different,” said Brett on why he chose to enlist in the MA rating. “My dad was in the Air Force; my grandfather was in the Army. I wanted to join before I got too old.”

In 2023, Brett joined Maritime Expeditionary Squadron Eight (MSRON 8) and has since supported the team as a vehicle coordinator for Echo Company. He is also the Advanced Skills Manager (ASM), responsible for ensuring that other members of MSRON 8 have their vehicle qualifications and required training completed. Doing so ensures that everyone is trained and ready to support MSRON 8’s overall mission to provide anti-terrorism, force protection and expeditionary security, and intelligence to the fleet. He credits the active hands-on support of the chiefs within the MSRON and the fact that they all train to the mission as a cohesive unit with his ability to thrive and succeed within the command.

“We qualify as a team. I don’t want to qualify as an individual,” he said. “If a member of the team fails, we all fail.”

Brett highlighted travel, hiking, comradery and experiences as perks of the job, when discussing what he enjoys about deploying with the Navy. He specifically pointed out having new and exotic places to hike along with the ability to train on various weapons systems as something he looks forward to when deploying around the world.

“Don’t be nervous, just have fun with it,” he said. “I mean, it's what you make it really. You can go wherever you want. Use it to your advantage to travel to see things and go places you can never afford, you know,” said Brett. “There's always its ups and downs. But as long as you can, you know, float with it. It's good. It's a good life. It’s free ammo.”
