Joint Task Force-Red Hill (JTF-RH) completed its defueling mission, removing over 104 million gallons of fuel via gravity and all accessible residual fuel, and turned responsibility for the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility (RHBFSF) over to the Navy Closure Task Force (NCTF-RH) at a ceremony aboard the Battleship Missouri Memorial, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, March 28, 2024.
“While I sincerely wish the circumstances were different, I could not be more proud of the awesome work the Joint Task Force-Red Hill team has done,” said Vice Adm. John Wade, JTF-RH Commander. “It has been a privilege to serve the people of Hawaii and our military families and to do something critically important for the environment. My hope is that the removal of the majority of the fuel from above the aquifer helps us all collectively move forward and continue the healing process.”
Overall, JTF-RH safely removed 104,703,574 gallons of fuel from the facility, including gravity defueling and removing all accessible residual fuel, roughly six months ahead of schedule from the original Defueling Plan.
NCTF-RH is a dedicated team responsible for leading the closure and long-term environmental remediation efforts at Red Hill, in partnership with Federal and State regulators and key community stakeholders. NCTF-RH is committed to ensuring a safe and sustainable environment for the local community. Charged with the safe closure of the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility (RHBFSF), the Department of the Navy established NCTF-RH as a commitment to the community and the environment.
