FARAH, Afghanistan — The Farah Provincial Reconstruction Team Civil Affairs department hosted a luncheon for 10 local contractors who donated over $5,000 worth of supplies to the Farah City Orphanage and for the orphans themselves to thank the contractors for their generosity, Forward Operating Base Farah, Afghanistan, March 11.
From winter jackets and sneakers to soccer uniforms and wood burning stoves, the PRT delivered to the orphanage all the items that were donated by the local Farah contractors who simply wanted to help out the underprivileged kids of their city.
"It's very nice to be here today and to be able to meet some of the kids who we tried to help," said Mr. Assanji Mohammad, one of the contractors instrumental in coordinating the donation to the Orphanage. "I know what it is like to need some help from others and I'm just glad I was able to help these children out."
Over 130 boys and girls belong to the orphanage and were able to benefit from the donations by their fellow Afghans.
"A majority of the kids at our orphanage do not have very much of anything at all," said Muhammad Assad, a teacher who works at the orphanage and helps raise the children there. "The donations that we received were crucial to getting our kids through the winter and it means even more that the items were donated by our own people here in Farah. People didn't do things like that here in years past - things are definitely changing for the better."
