FORT RILEY, Kansas --After serving 20 years in the military, Master Sergeant Tyler R. Fernlund has retired from active duty. Tyler, the oldest son of Randy Fernlund and Nicki Alves, is originally from Lakeview, Oregon.

Tyler's academic journey led him to graduate from Lakeview High School in 2004. In pursuit of serving his country, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Heavy-Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic in June of the same year. After three years of serving in this capacity, Tyler underwent reclassification training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, in June 2007 to become a Calvary Scout, which he successfully completed. This training allowed him to join the highly skilled Calvary Scout unit, where he could utilize his expertise to serve his country in a new capacity.

MSG Ferlund has dedicated 20 years of his life to serving his country. Throughout his career, he has exhibited exemplary leadership qualities and has held various Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) positions, ranging from Team Leader to Operations Sergeant Major. His contributions towards the development of a professional NCO Corps and the readiness of the Army have been exceptional, earning him the prestigious Sergeant Audie Murphy Award. This medal is only awarded to the top 1% of enlisted personnel, and it serves as a testament to MSG Ferlund's unwavering commitment and outstanding service to his country.

Master Sergeant Fernlund has successfully completed a range of professional military education courses, demonstrating proficiency in various leadership and operational skills. As a Distinguished Honor Graduate of the Basic Leader Course, recipient of the Distinguished Leadership Award in the Advanced Leader Course, and a member of the Commandant's List in the Senior Leader Course, MSG Fernlund has shown exceptional leadership qualities and dedication to excellence. Additionally, MSG Fernlund has completed the Cavalry Leader Course and graduated from Air Assault School, further expanding his knowledge and capabilities.

"I am glad that I have had 20 years of experience in the Army," said Tyler. The Army set me up for a lot of opportunities and success and introduced me to great friends. I am excited and ready to see what is next for me."

Tyler has recently completed his tenure as the Operation Sergeant for Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, stationed at Fort Riley. During his time in this position, he exhibited exceptional professionalism and leadership skills, which left a lasting positive impact on the Division.

At present, Tyler is serving as an intern with Prairie Land Partners, a well-known organization located in Abilene, KS. He has made his home here together with his beloved wife, Lindsi Fernlund, and their three beautiful children, Brayden, Kayla, and Layne.

In the wake of this momentous transition, as the curtain falls on an era marked by unwavering dedication and steadfast service, we are reminded of Tyler's profound impact on the U.S. Army, his community, and the Nation. As we bid farewell to Tyler, let us carry forward the legacy of excellence, integrity, and selflessness that epitomizes the finest traditions of the United States military. For in the echoes of their service, we find inspiration, courage, and a timeless reminder that true heroes never retire; they simply embark on their next noble mission, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all those they have touched just like retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant Tyler R. Fernlund.
