Members of the 174th Attack Wing’s Maintenance Group spoke with students who attend Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) during a visit to Rome, NY, March 8, 2024.

During the visit students were able to watch as members from the maintenance group landed a MQ-9 on the runway of Griffiss International Airport.

Afterwards, students were able to speak with members of the maintenance group to ask them questions about the aircraft.

“The students seemed fascinated and intrigued,” Master Sgt. Jeff Allen, of the 174th Maintenance Operations Flight.. “The majority of people that I spoke with were full of questions. Due to their mechanical nature, most were asking questions about how the aircraft works and what it’s capable of.”

Though the students got to see the airframe in action and question the members, the visit wasn’t one-sided.

“The purpose for this event was twofold. The Airframe and Powerplant program at MVCC is full of exactly the type of people we are looking for in maintenance, those with a mechanical mindset and intrigued by aviation,” said Allen. “Secondly, MVCC provides a two week FAA A&P prep course that our maintainers have the option of attending, paid for through the base. This visit allowed a few 174th members to see the school house and speak with the program manager. Having that certification furthers our maintainers knowledge and provides them with opportunities after their military service.”

Airman 1st Class Alex Regna, Crew Chief with the maintenance group, is currently attending classes for the Airframe and Powerplant program at MVCC.

“ The exciting part of all this for me is that I’ll have more knowledge when it comes to aviation,” said Regna. “I can then bring that knowledge with me back to Syracuse, which will make me a more versatile Crew Chief.”

Regna’s classmates have shown interest in the past about possibly wanting to join the Air National Guard. Because of that interest the 174th ATKW sent a recruiter to speak with the students.

The students were able to ask the recruiter about different job opportunities at the 174th, if they’d receive sign-on bonuses, share stories about growing up in a military family and the benefits that came with it.
