NANGARHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan — Service members and civilians serving under Task Force Mountain Warrior ran a three and a half mile race in honor of St. Patrick's Day on Forward Operating Base Fenty in eastern Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, March 13.
Over 200 people participated in the run, including Soldiers from the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, out of Fort Carson, Colo.
The first three males, first three females and first three five-man teams were awarded for their achievement.
Jackson Kamal, a civilian contractor, came in first place at 19 minutes and 25 seconds. U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Noe Perez with the 704th Brigade Support Battalion, came in second at 21 minutes and seven seconds. U.S. Army Maj. Jeffrey Thurnher with 4th Brigade's Headquarters and Headquarters Company, was the third male to cross the finish line at 21 minutes and 37 seconds.
U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Ericka Perez with HHC, 704th BSB was the first female to finish the run with a time of 26 minutes and 26 seconds. U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Kristen Pack with the 240th Forward Surgical Team finished as the second female at 26 minutes and 54 seconds. U.S. Army Sgt. Alexandria Good with Company B, 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, finished with a time of 27 minutes and 11 seconds, making her the third female to cross the finish line.
U.S. Army Capt. Frank Guasta, U.S. Army Lt. Col. Thomas VonEschenvach, U.S. Army 1st Lt. Joshua Taft, Spc. John Steigenberger and U.S. Army Capt. Jonathan Erwin, all from the 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, were the runners that made up the winning team, Team Lighthorse. The last runner on the team came in at 23 minutes and 12 seconds.
Company C, 4th BSTB Soldiers made up the second winning team, finishing with a time of 24 minutes and 58 seconds. U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Ivan Saldana, U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Joseph Alvaro, Spc. Nickolas Jones, U.S. Army Sgt. Robert Umbaugh and U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jason Reformat made up this team.
U.S. Army Warrant Officer Stephen Kambouris, U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Timothy Keesecker, U.S. Army 1st Lt. Darick Waguespack, U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 3 Chad Field and U.S. Army Sgt. James Crank, all from Company B, 4th BSTB, made up the third place team, finishing with a time of 25 minutes and 15 seconds.
Local businesses in the Colorado Springs area donated Irish-themed T-shirts, gift certificates, necklaces and hats for those who participated in the run. The runners wore the accessories with pride.
