FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. - Approximately 60 soldiers and airmen with the Pennsylvania National Guard gathered for a public affairs training workshop here March 2-3, 2024.

The conference featured informed presenters who spoke about best practices in the field of public affairs, highlighting the critical role it plays in supporting the Pennsylvania National Guard's mission.

“This state has phenomenal public affairs talent, video, photography and journalism, even in our youth bar,” said Wayne Hall, state public affairs officer. “So this is an opportunity to bring that collective talent together, share it, learn from it and just continue to improve.”

Subject matter experts from within the state made presentations on ethics, writing, professional uses of social media, photography, video production and lessons learned from deployments. Participants had the opportunity to network, share experiences and build relationships with other PNG members in the public affairs field.

The speakers included Maj. Gen. James McCormack, Pennsylvania's Assistant Adjutant General, Brig. Gen. Laura McHugh, Deputy Adjutant General - Army, and Brig. Gen. Michael J. Regan Jr., Deputy Adjutant General - Air.

McCormack emphasized the pivotal role of access to correct information for the public and spoke about the importance of being clear and accurate, and that in the changing world of information, being trustworthy is crucial.

"Today, we have a battle for appropriate and accurate information,” said McCormack. "We need to effectively communicate not just as a duty, but as a commitment to the public's right to know.”

The focus of the conference shifted towards the improvement of public affairs practices and disseminating accurate and timely information to Guardsmen and the public.
