Knoxville, Tenn. – The Tennessee National Guard announces U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Michael M. Johnson as the next state command chief master sergeant for the Tennessee Air National Guard.

“If I’m going to lead the enlisted Airmen of Tennessee, then I need them to know each other and what we gain through our strengths,” said CMSgt Johnson.

With a wealth of experience, CMSgt Johnson adds dedication, and a fresh perspective to elevate the already stellar reputation of the Tennessee Air National Guard. Within this new role as advisor to the Assistant Adjutant General, Air for the state of Tennessee, U.S. Air Force Colonel Jason Glass, CMSgt Johnson will collaborate and connect with various groups ensuring mission success across the state. Key leaders from operations, readiness, training, utilization, morale, technical and professional development, will rely on Johnson to assist in ensuring the overall quality of life for Airmen is at its highest standard.

As Command Chief Master Sgt. Benjamin Williams passes the torch to CMSgt Johnson, both recognize the legacy of service entrusted in the position. Building on that foundation, CMSgt Johnson will add from his own experience to tackle the unique opportunities of today’s Air National Guard, while continuing to uphold the traditions of honor, integrity, and service.

“We are the Volunteer state, to include the whole state, each wing has to be ready. One of the things I'm excited about is getting our Tennessee National Guard and Air National Guard working together on training opportunities that we can all be a part of,” said CMSgt Johnson.

CMSgt Johnson enlisted in the United States Air Force in March 1991. After attending technical training at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas and graduating from the Apprentice Strategic Aircraft Maintenance Specialist Course, he was assigned to the 134th Air Refueling Wing in Knoxville, Tenn.

CMSgt Johnson served in numerous roles, including Crew Chief, Isochronal Inspection Dock Floor Lead, Maintenance Operations Center Superintendent, Resource Advisor/Budget Analyst, Aircraft Maintenance Squadron Flight Chief, and Component Maintenance Flight Chief. Prior to his current position, CMSgt Johnson served as the Maintenance Group Superintendent.

In an ever-evolving landscape, CMSgt Johnson aims to ensure that the Tennessee Air National Guard remains at the forefront of technological advancements and strategic readiness. With clear communication in focus, CMSgt Johnson’s vision for the state is not just about maintaining excellence, but pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved when the Tennessee National Guard works together.

“I’m not going to reinvent the wheel, but every minute of my career I’ve learned something. I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t lived the life I’ve lived. Helping others get what they need is the most important thing to me,” said CMSgt Johnson.
