Sailors assigned to commands at Fleet Activities (FLEACT), Yokosuka participated in the Yokosuka Police Department’s “Zero Tolerance for Drinking and Driving” campaign at Yokosuka-Chuo train station, Dec. 6.
The event, co-sponsored by FLEACT Yokosuka, was intended to encourage responsible decision making and to educate and raise awareness of the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving.
Commander, FLEACT, Yokosuka, Capt. David Glenister, attended the event as a guest speaker. He urged participants to make healthy decisions and to help everyone they know do the same.
“This is not just to urge those of us who would drink and drive to think before they act,” said Glenister. “This is also to encourage those who would not to prevent their friends and family members from doing so as well.”
FLEACT, Yokosuka traffic safety officer stressed the importance of responsible decision making behind the wheel.
“This event is important on many levels,” said Michael Kretschmer, FLEACT Yokosuka traffic safety officer. “Any driving under the influence incidents at all is still far too many. We’re here today to make sure that people are conscious of their decisions far before they ever decide to make them.”
Sailors helped the Japanese police officers hand out “daikon,” the Japanese word for radish, to people on the street. This was done as a play on words, because the word daikon can be loosely translated to the word meaning “responsibility.”
“I think it’s incredibly important to participate in events like this,” said Ship’s Serviceman 2nd Class Christy Naranjo, president of FLEACT Yokosuka chapter of Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions. “Not only does it remind our shipmates to make responsible decisions, it shows to the Japanese people that we care about the impact we have outside of the base.”
