SZCZECIN, Poland—U.S.Army V Corps hosted its second warfighting symposium along with the Multinational Corps Northeast Feb. 5-7, 2024, in Szczecin, Poland.

Military leaders, subject matter experts and allied partners from various nations came together to engage in discussions, share insights and strategies to strengthen warfighting capabilities and evolving security challenges.

“This is truly getting at interoperability within NATO between two corps, with a focus on combat procedures, and trying to create better lethality, both within each corps, and then if we ever have to fight together,” said Brig. Gen. Timothy Kemp, Multinational Corps Northeast deputy chief of staff for operations.

Polish Armed Forces Brig. Gen. Tomasz Kowalik, deputy chief of staff, support, for Multinational Corps Northeast said that as a warfighting corps, values are rooted in NATO tactical procedures and standardization agreements. He said the future battlefields will be NATO battlefields, so the time is now to align those doctrines and tactical procedures in these tense periods of peacetime.

“It is absolutely relevant that we develop our warfighting capabilities to strike and defeat potential adversaries,” said Kowalik. “Once we attain that capacity, once we are proficient at that, we automatically display our ability to defend the alliance, enhance the alliance, and by that we also deter the enemy from taking actions.”

The multi-day symposium aimed to establish recurring engagement and continuous dialogue between V Corps, U.S. division directorate leadership, allied corps and divisions, by sharing thoughts on organizations, processes and procedures for large-scale combat operations.

Maj. Gen. Ollie Kingsbury, deputy commanding general of V Corps, maneuver, mentioned that this particular instance is just one of several interactions with the Multinational Corps Northeast over the years, and each interaction has provided valuable learning opportunities resulting in more advanced and sophisticated plans.

“We are learning a huge amount about their planning from a NATO land tactical plan perspective,” said Kingsbury. “We are also learning from the senior nation representatives inside the corps and at this symposium, about their national plans.”

French Army Brig. Gen. Jean-Pierre Fague, commanding general of readiness for U.S. 3rd Infantry Division, added that NATO is undergoing rapid transformations, including the development of new force models, refining tactical plans, and building up national and multinational divisions in eastern Europe with the integration of deep and close combat being keys to these developments.

“The grand purpose is to be ready to fight and win in large scale combat operations,” said Fague. “All these units, including the Multinational Corps Northeast are on the right path to building their own operational capabilities. They see solutions, they see options and all of them are gaining something different, but they are all gaining a lot.”

The future of working together and building combat credible formations within eastern Europe remains a priority for all corps and divisions. Brig. Gen. Kevin Lambert, V Corps commanding general of support, mentioned that the expectation is that it leads to follow-on engagements in deeper procedural and technical interoperability.

“Each country realizes individually that not one of us can do it alone,” said Lambert. “We have to be together, which is why ‘Stronger Together’ is more than just a motto, it’s how we fight; it’s how we eventually defeat adversaries, and that’s together.”
