    502nd Air Base Wing

The 502nd Air Base Wing's first Commanders Call of 2024 began with applause inside the Bob Hope Theater on Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, Jan. 29. U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Russell Driggers, JBSA and 502nd ABW commander, welcomed attendants and recognized outstanding Airmen, civilians and organizations with a video highlighting their achievements.
"I wanted to be able to show you the amount of excellence of this wing brings to the table every day," Driggers said.
During his address, Driggers showcased the commitment of JBSA and 502nd ABW to adapt to an evolving global landscape by leveraging technology and emphasizing the importance of trust and readiness to meet future challenges. Driggers emphasized the volatile geopolitical landscape, stressed the need to maintain focus on the mission and also announced structural changes to enhance operational efficiency.
“We want JBSA to be as ready and resilient as possible. The initiatives we are putting into place are meant to have a long-lasting impact,” he said.
He outlined forthcoming projects to bolster infrastructure resilience through partnerships and aimed to elevate the base to the "next level of excellence" before the end of his tenure later this year. Some of those initiatives include plans to install 5G cellular towers, streamline civilian hiring processes and improve infrastructure to set conditions for future success.
Driggers also stressed the importance of developing a "readiness mindset" and building trust within the organization and among mission partners. He also encouraged feedback for continuous improvement.
“It’s our ability to trust that scares China. It is the NCO Corps that is the critical link to build trust across the organization. The trust between our officers and enlisted, trust between our various organizations and mission partners, is what scares China because they don’t trust at all. If you ever lose faith in your leadership, have the conversation to figure out how we can build trust so we can continue to work and focus on the mission.” Driggers said.
Driggers continuously emphasized the importance of trust and early development of readiness, responsiveness and resilience in order to be ready for future threats.
“We need to be getting together, trusting each other so that we can get after the real bad guys,” he said.
The Commander’s Call also featured guest speakers who added additional installation-wide announcements like recycling efforts and news about the upcoming Great Texas Airshow in April.
