The 2023 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl was full of hype and a surprise reunion for two brothers.
Meet 28-year-old Sgt. Brandon Caufield, an infantryman and senior sniper assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 35th Armor Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, and his younger brother, 21-year-old Bryce Caufield, a student-athlete who plays as a tight end for Oregon State University.
Sgt. Brandon Caufield, hailing from Garden Grove, California, enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduating high school and became the first in his family to serve.
When asked about his decision to join, he stated that when he was young, he played Army.
“It's just something that really stuck with me,” he said. “It's about taking pride in my country and pride in the service.”
Bryce Caufield, from Lake Oswego, Oregon, was always a football superstar growing up. He served as a team captain for two seasons at Lakeridge High School, earned first-team all-league honors on defense during his high school career, and ultimately achieved his goal of becoming a Division I athlete on Oregon State University’s football team. He is also pursuing a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology.
The Caufield brothers always shared a special bond. Growing up, they constantly tried to outcompete each other. This sibling rivalry helped drive them to be their best, whether playing football, video games, or even academics. The brothers continue to compare themselves to each other to this day.
“We’ve had this talk at least a dozen times, and we’ve come to the conclusion that I have long-term athleticism because my body gets put through it more with ruck marches and day-long missions,” said Brandon Cauflield. “He, on the other hand, has more short-term bursts of energy. If we were to do a 40-yard dash, he’d smoke me in it right now.”
Since Brandon Caufield enlisted, it’s been difficult for the brothers to spend time together due to their busy schedules. After nearly a decade, their paths finally crossed again. When Bryce Caufield learned that his team would be playing against the University of Notre Dame in this year's Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl held in El Paso, Texas, he reached out to his brother, who is currently stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, to tell him the good news.
When Brandon Caufield found out about his brother’s upcoming game, he expressed, “I went excited with joy. [It was] like a Christmas gift to myself.”
Bryce arrived on Christmas, and the Caufield brothers spent some long overdue, quality time together in the days leading up to the game.
On the day of the Sun Bowl game, Brandon Caufield found himself on the sidelines with the rest of his family in the sold-out stadium, offering close support for Bryce Caufield as Oregon State faced off against Notre Dame. It was an opportunity both brothers appreciated, and neither would soon forget.
