The 911th Airlift Wing welcomed nearly 50 individuals from the Pittsburgh Technology Council, local businesses and state legislative offices to the base showcasing its capabilities as a mission-ready reserve wing, Oct. 14, 2023 to Pittsburgh International Airport Air Reserve Station.
Visitors toured the base's C-17 flight simulator, virtual-reality lab used for job speciality training, 3D-printing lab and a 911th AW assigned C-17 Globemaster III.
In addition to familiarizing Pittsburgh's commercial innovators with the capabilities of the 911th AW, the tour connected them to the base's Steel Airmen and representatives of the AFWERX program. AFWERX, the innovation arm of the Department of the Air Force, teams internationally across academia, industry and government to develop technology, expand talent and transition dual-use capabilities.
And within the Pittsburgh region there are more than a few small businesses and research institutions that could extend their services to transform the Air Force for the future.
According to the Allegheny Conference on Community Development the city of Pittsburgh is a burgeoning technology hub which centers around life sciences and its intersection with advanced manufacturing and Artificial Intelligence. Within it's region, Pittsburgh has two Tier 1 research universities, two major hospital systems, more than 160 regional life sciences establishments employing more than 7,300 people and more than $1 million in research dollars awarded to life sciences.
