Naval Health Clinic Lemoore (NHCL) and the Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9 medical team provided typhoid and seasonal influenza shots in a mass vaccination effort called a shot exercise or SHOTEX held on Nov. 8 and 9, 2023 along the flightline at Naval Air Station Lemoore’s (NAS) Hangar 3.

“The tremendous support from Naval Health Clinic Lemoore greatly enhances our warfighter’s readiness to quickly deploy and operate in austere environments,” said Capt. Gerald Tritz, commander, CVW-9. “I’m extremely proud of the group effort made here at NAS Lemoore in carrying out this critical part of overall mission readiness and I’m confident these efforts contributed to making us a more lethal and prepared unit ready for the fight.”

The SHOTEX was a great example of the coordinated effort by the NHCL immunizations department, patient administration, information technology (IT) department, the MHS GENESIS team, the operations side medical clinic, Hornet Health, as well as the CVW-9 flight surgeons and aviation medicine technician corpsmen (AVT).

Vaccinations were given in a safe and timely manner and to as many as Sailors as possible in a set period.

“We prioritized, removed barriers, and empowered the clinic’s various teams to facilitate bringing mass vaccinations to the aviators and maintainers at their work centers,” said Capt. Aaron Werbel, NHCL director. “Members from information technology and patient safety worked in concert with the immunization team, to ensure over six hours of reliable internet connectivity, and an optimal environment for the delivery of vaccines. The multidisciplinary approach and teamwork removed hurdles, saved time, and minimized disruption of planning and ongoing maintenance timelines.”

More than 300 Sailors were vaccinated in the first day of the CVW-9 specific SHOTEX.

“Our close integration with the Lemoore Naval Health Clinic led to all three of our CVW-9 F/A-18 squadrons placing in the top ten for medical readiness throughout Naval Aviation,” Tritz added.

Multiple injection stations were set up with hospital corpsmen ready to give vaccinations in a safe, organized method. The quicker the vaccines are given, the quicker the Sailors can get back to work.

Aviation Ordnanceman 2nd class Brandon Lancaster, assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 14 received his typhoid and seasonal influenza vaccinations at a SHOTEX held specifically for CVW-9.

“It was really convenient to get both of these shots in the hangar with barely any waiting,” said Lancaster.

Typhoid fever is most common in parts of the world where water and food may be unsafe, and sanitation is poor. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the typhoid vaccination for people traveling to places where typhoid fever is common, such as South Asia.

The CDC also suggests getting the seasonal flu vaccination to protect people around you, such as other service member living or working in shared spaces. It also helps those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness, like babies and young children, older people, and people with certain chronic health conditions.

Naval Health Clinic Lemoore, co-located with Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Lemoore, ensures the readiness of its active-duty service members and improves the lives of military families through the delivery of high-quality healthcare to over 14,000 eligible beneficiaries at Naval Air Station Lemoore, California and NAS Fallon, Nevada. The command also provides dental care and medical administrative support to Navy, Marine Corps, and international students at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), Defense Language Institute and the Center for Information Dominance in Monterey, California. The command’s mission is to advance the readiness and health of our warfighters and beneficiaries and invest in our people and partnerships.
