From Little Rock, Arkansas to the III Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group in Okinawa, Japan, the journey of U.S. Navy Religious Program Specialist Petty Officer 2nd Class Robert D. Nard is a testament to the transformative power of the decisions we make. Nard's story exemplifies how one can rise above challenges, stay true to their moral compass, and emerge not just as a better Sailor, but as a beacon of inspiration, earning the prestigious title of Sailor of the Quarter for the second time in a row.

“Every benefit, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit,” stated Napoleon Hill.

Nard was introduced to adversity at a very young age. He and his three brothers were separated from their birth mother, separated from each other, and transferred in and out of foster care throughout their childhood.

“As a kid I was open-minded, I was quick to go with the flow because I knew that I didn’t have control. Not being able to put feelings into a description going with the flow and doing what people say, was most of my childhood,” said Nard.

As he grew older, Nard became restless and sought after change. He took the initiative to take control of his future and enlist in the United States Navy as a Religious Program Specialist. Nard is the first in his family to serve in the U.S. military and has proudly served for 10 years.

Throughout his career, he’s been faced with many obstacles, one resulting in him receiving administrative punishments. Although this roadblock took a heavy hit, he did not let it consume him, he decided to accept the situation as a learning experience. Nard began seizing opportunities like attending a Martial Arts Instructor Course and graduated as the only Sailor on the course. Shortly after this, he received his first recognition as Sailor of the Quarter.

“After going through adversity, myself it is important that I get to know the Marines and Sailors as human beings and not just the war fighters that they are,” said Nard.

As the chapters of Nard's story unfold, we witness his evolution reaching its peak today as a leader equipped with experiences that have given him the ability to inspire and create profound connections, accentuating not only his steadfast dedication to those around him but also underscoring his development as a devoted Sailor.
