KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. --- The Pennsylvania National Guard Associations hosted mentorship tables during their annual conference here, Oct. 27-28, 2023, offering attendees an opportunity to make connections and create bonds between Soldiers, Airmen, veterans and representatives from professional industries, whether they were senior leaders or lower enlisted.
“You as a senior NCO need to take and mentor your service members so that they are prepared to take your job and understand their value that they bring to the team,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Andrew Campbell, senior enlisted leader of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. “If they don’t understand, and we don’t do our jobs communicating, they’re going to punch their ticket at their four or six year marks.”
With those in leadership roles mentoring their subordinates, the running theory is that retention and recruiting would improve too.
Sometimes people underestimate the power of a little encouragement.
“I had some great leaders that paved the path for me,” said Command Sgt. Maj. John T. Raines, 13th Command Sergeant Major of the Army National Guard. “When I watched them be successful in their careers and watched them go from position to position, they inspired me to become Sergeant Major of the Army. I was just in the Regular Army at the time and it changed from wanting to be Sergeant Major of the Army to Sergeant Major of the National Guard.”
Mentorship is the gate of future for the military.
“We’re going to be fighting this fight for a long time if we don’t collectively communicate," Campbell said.
