FORT KNOX, Ky. – Anthony Funeral Homes will no longer be handling graveside services for the interment of remains of U.S. Army Air Forces Flight Officer Chester L. Rinke, a Soldier killed during World War II. The burial is still scheduled for 10:15 a.m., Nov. 6, at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio.
Media interested in covering and/or obtaining more information about the interment should contact family member, Christine Papadeonise, 330-705-8374, chris.papadeonise@gmail.com, casualty assistance officer, Capt. Neva Finke, 513-889-8768 or the Army Casualty Office at (800) 892-2490.
A native of Marquette, Michigan, Rinke was a flight officer assigned to the 678th Bombardment Squadron, 444th Bombardment Group (Very Heavy), 58th Bombardment Wing, Twentieth Bomber Command. He was killed in action June 26, 1944, after the B-29 Superfortress, on which he was serving, crashed into a rice paddy in the village of Sapekhati, India, following a bombing raid on Imperial Iron and Steel Works at Yawata, Kyushu Island, Japan. He was 33 years old.
In October 2014, an investigation team recovered life support equipment and wreckage associated with the B29 aircraft from the crash site. Investigators later excavated the site in 2018 and 2019 recovering possible osseous remains and material evidence.
Rinke was accounted for by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency May 5, 2023, after his remains were identified using material evidence and anthropological and mitochondrial DNA analysis.
