NEWPORT, R.I. – Dr. Carlos Javier, a mechanical engineer and principal investor in the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport’s Undersea Warfare Platforms and Payload Integration Department, recently was named a Hero Honoree in Great Minds in STEM by the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards (HENAAC) Conference.

“HENAAC Award honorees are among the best and brightest in their field, and the members of the Class of 2023 meet the highest standards of excellence that the 35-year legacy of the awards have come to represent,” states a press release announcing the award.

Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) Hero Honorees are civilian and uniformed military personnel from Department of Defense agencies, labs and branches who excel in the STEM fields.

In 2019, after earning his doctorate from the University of Rhode Island (URI), Javier, a resident of Warwick, Rhode Island, accepted a full-time position in the Undersea Warfare Platforms and Payload Integration Department, where he continued his novel URI research on underwater explosives. While attending URI, his ground-breaking research into blast-initiated implosion of submerged composites pushed the limits of both experimental methods and numerical analysis. “The results of this research are extremely important in gaining a deeper understanding of the ocean environment, and to support the growing Blue Maritime Economy expansion,” the award states.

As a principal investigator, Javier leads his own team upon receiving research funding as part of the In-House Laboratory Independent Research program. In addition to those duties, he has been mentoring two Division Newport employees pursuing their master’s degrees from URI by guiding them through the completion of their thesis and subsequent degrees.

Awards were presented at the 35th anniversary of conference held Oct. 11-14 in Pasadena, California.

Javier was recently profiled as part of Division Newport’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. See a social media post here: https://www.facebook.com/NUWCNewport/posts/pfbid0tYDDCMHR7iDKSdnXna1rDBDqf74HB6QGJ8B2rs5aY4SG4rcM4ao5MRzT4dY8rRSHl
