The Army War College Unveils Academic Building in Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

CARLISLE BARRACKS, Pa. (AP) — The United States Army War College officially opened its state-of-the-art academic building Wednesday, commemorating the completion of the $85 million project.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by Gen. Randy George, Army Chief of Staff, and included Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Maj. Gen. David Hill, commandant of the US Army War College; Command Sgt. Maj. Charles Gregory; and Dr. David Dworak, the college's provost.
Together they symbolized the Army's commitment to military education and readiness, Hill said.
"Today, we open Root Hall, our new state-of-the-art academic facility designed to enhance learning for generations to come," Hill said. "While our spaces and technologies change, our mission remains unchanged."
He outlined the college's mission: "Developing leaders on strategy, operational art and joint warfighting; teaching force management, the elements of national power and strategic readiness; fostering innovation, design thinking and national security affairs; and strengthening our profession through deep introspection and discussion on ethics, leadership and organizational culture."
"Root Hall allows us to carry Root's vision boldly into the future while honoring the proud history and traditions upon which this great college was founded," Hill said.
The facility is named after Secretary of War Elihu Root, who ordered the creation of the college in 1901. The new building stands as a testament to the institution's dedication to providing the highest standards of education and training for the nation's future military leaders and those of allies, designed to equip students with tools and knowledge to confront 21st century challenges, officials said.
George spoke about the Army's motto, “This we will defend.”
"It reminds me and should remind all of us that the purpose of our Army is timeless and clear, that we must be ready to fight and win our nation’s wars,” he said. “To do this, we must maintain the American people’s trust, which means serving with confidence and character, which is the essence of a profession."
The Army War College is crucial in strengthening the profession, George said.
"Our Army War College develops strategic leaders and facilitates healthy debate, and it will help our Army continuously and iteratively transform over the next several years,” he said.
George emphasized the importance of reputation.
"I want everybody to know that the teammates they will get are the best, most disciplined and the most professional land fighting force in the world,” he said.

Others participating in the ribbon cutting included Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael Weimer, retired Lt. Gen. Roger Shultz, chairman of the Army War College Foundation Board of Trustees, and representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the construction company and architecture firm.
