III MEF Band Advises Gotemba Nishi Junior High Musicians / 第3海兵遠征軍音楽隊が御殿場西中学校吹奏楽部と交流

The Third Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF) Band, stationed in Okinawa, Japan, offered more than a performance to student musicians studying at Gotemba Nishi Junior High School, October 14, 2023.

The band was originally requested to perform at the installation’s Fuji Friendship Festival. They sought an opportunity to get out into the community before the festival.

“Many of the students had no idea of what to expect today, but after hearing the Marines perform they became excited,” said Asuka Furusawa, the band teacher.

Some of the songs that the band performed in the Inno Elementary School gym, brought back memories for Furusawa.

“I used to play in a brass band as well, I knew some of the songs the Marines played today. I personally, was excited about today too,” she said.

After the performance, many of the Marines worked with students in small sections, offering advice on how to bring out the best sounds with their instruments.

The Marines understand that advice like this is important.

“Giving them quality time with their sections to develop their music abilities, I think that’s a great thing to have right now, especially in the early ages of musicianship,” said Gunnery Sgt. Martin Arreola, the III MEF Band enlisted conductor.

Although the students appeared to appreciate the bands performance, they may not have been aware that the Marines are experts in their fields.

“Some of them have masters [degrees], some of them have doctorates in musical education,” said Arreola.

Furusawa said the opportunity to learn from the Marines could be heard immediately.

“The quality of tone improved, especially the brass section,” she said. “The fuzzy tones the trumpeters often had issues with has been solved.  Now the students are aware of how they can maintain quality tones and that’s great.”







After group rehearsals, the entire group came together to play the song.

Following the collaborative performance, the Marines climbed stairs to the catwalk and became members of the audience.

The entire Gotemba Nishi marching band put on a show for the Marines, demonstrating several numbers they have already mastered including the drill team performers. 

Throughout the show, Marines offered the students encouragement with clapping, hoots, and shouting.

Col. Neil Owens, Commanding Officer of Combined Arms Training Center, Camp Fuji, said the III MEF Band made a positive impact during the visit with the students.

“I’m super impressed in their ability to instruct. I’ve been walking around, listening to these groups.  The Marines are giving pointers and coaching tips, and the students are listening. I don’t know a lot about music, but I can tell the difference,” Owens said. “I think it’s fantastic, I think it shows the Marines commitment to the local community around Camp Fuji and to the Japanese people as a whole.”

2023年10月14日、沖縄を拠点とする第3海兵遠征軍音楽隊が御殿場西中学校吹奏楽部員と演奏だけにとどまらない音楽を通じた交流会を行いました。
このイベントは、音楽隊が富士フレンドシップフェスティバルに合わせてキャンプ富士を訪問するのに合わせ、御殿場市の皆様とも交流の機会を持ちたいという希望に御殿場西中学校様が快く応じてくださったことで実現したものです。
吹奏楽部顧問の古澤明日香先生は「音楽隊と交流会を行うと聞いた生徒たちは、初めての機会に戸惑いもあったようだ。ただ、音楽隊のパフォーマンスを見て目の色が変わった」と話してくださいました。
音楽隊が演奏した曲の中には、古澤先生にとっても思い出深いものもあったようです。
「私も吹奏楽部員だったので、知っている曲もあった。今日のイベントは個人的にも楽しみにしていた」とのことです。

音楽隊による演奏のあとは、楽器ごとに分かれて練習を行いました。海兵隊員は生徒たちに、どうすればよい音が出せるのかを丁寧に説明していました。
隊員たちも、同じ楽器を演奏する先輩として指導に熱が入ったようです。
第3海兵遠征軍音楽隊下士官指揮者のマーティン・アレオラ1等軍曹は「楽器を吹き始めてから早い段階で演奏力を伸ばすために質の高い指導を受けられることは素晴らしいことだと思う」と話していました。
イベントの冒頭で圧巻の演奏を披露した隊員たちの言葉を、生徒たちも真剣に聞き入っていました。アレオラ1曹は「隊員の中には音楽分野の修士号や博士号を取得している者もいる」と話し、隊員らの知識と経験に基づく指導を見守っていました。
練習の成果は、すぐに生徒たちの演奏に現れました。
古澤先生は「特に金管楽器がよくなった。これまでは音が濁ってしまうことがあったが、きれいな音を出すための気づきと意識付けができたのだと思う」と、上達を感じたようです。

楽器ごとの練習を終えた隊員と生徒たちは、全体での合奏も行いました。
イベントを締めくくるのは御殿場西中学校吹奏楽部の皆さんによるパフォーマンスです。カラーガードも含めた36人が一体となり、10月末に控える大会で披露する曲や日頃から練習している曲などを披露してくださりました。
音楽隊の隊員たちは、手拍子をしたり足でリズムを取ったり、素晴らしいパフォーマンスに歓声を上げたりと、観客としてショーを楽しんでいました。
キャンプ富士諸職種共同訓練センター司令官のニール・オーウェンズ大佐は、第3海兵遠征軍音楽隊との交流会は、地域に貢献する良い機会になったと思うと言います。
オーウェンズ大佐は「隊員たちが、これほど上手に指導できるとは思わなかった。パート練習では、隊員が話す演奏のコツやアドバイスを生徒たちが真剣に聞き入っていた。私は音楽のことはよく分からないが、指導の前後で音が変わったと感じる。キャンプ富士が日頃お世話になっている基地周辺の皆様に対し、音楽を通じて恩返しができたことは素晴らしい」と振り返りました。
