Labor and Delivery Tour Script:
Plan for four separate small videos- introduction, triage, admission/induction, and cesarean section

1) Introduction:
[Open outside in front of the Hospital, between the main entrance and the Emergency Room Entrance]
Talent: Hello and welcome to Martin Army Community Hospital. We are excited to take care of you and
your family during this special time. Today we are going to take you on a tour of our Labor and Delivery
unit starting with arrival to the hospital, where to park, and how to find us in the facility.
[Pan to Emergency Room Entrance/drive up loop] The emergency room entrance behind me is open
24/7. If you use this entrance, please make sure you use one of the emergency room parking spots
directly in front or utilize the patient parking garage as there is no parking in the drop off loop.
[Pan to main entrance/ drop off loop] Our hospital main entrance is open from 0600-1800 Monday
through Friday. Please be aware these doors are locked on nights, weekends, and holidays so plan to use
the ER entrance at these times.
[Back to talent] We are proud to reserve Stork Parking spots for our pregnant patients, they are
designated by a blue sign with a white stork and baby carriage [Overlay a photo of the stork parking
sign]. These spots are found on the ground floor of the patient parking garage and are located next to
the ground floor exit closest to the facility for your convenience.
[Back to talent] Whichever way you enter the facility, take the elevators to the 5 th floor for all
Department of Women’s Health and Newborn Care services. Click on the next video and we will take
you through our Triage processes.
2) Triage

Talent: Triage is the outpatient component of your care for acute and pressing needs. For non-
immediate concerns you can call the Women’s Health clinic, call the Tricare Nurse Advice line or send a
message your provider through the MHS Genesis Patient Portal.) If you have an emergency before 20
weeks gestation, please report to the front desk of the Emergency Room on the 1 st floor. Even past 20
weeks gestation, if you have a traumatic injury or emergency that threatens your life, limb, or eyesight
we may have to clear you in the Emergency Room first. The OB team can check on baby while you are
cared for in the ER.
Just down the hall from the Women’s Health clinic on the 5 th floor, you will find our waiting room and
entrance to Labor and Delivery and Mother Baby. This waiting area is where you will find our closest
vending machines, restroom, and is located just down the hall from one of our facility breastfeeding
rooms.

units you will push through these doors and move through the lobby. The Labor and Delivery entrance is
immediately to the front, The Mother Baby Unit is to the right down the short hallway. Please utilize the
doorbell on the wall to request access. If you’re visiting, you’ll need to know the name and room
number of the patient you are here to see.

In Labor and Delivery, we treat patients 20 weeks gestation and greater. Obstetric triage is available
24/7 via a direct phone line to one of our registered nurses or in person.

While in labor and delivery triage, we will assess both you and baby. These assessments are dependent
on what brought you into the hospital, but they may include a targeted questionnaire, fetal Non-Stress
test, labs, cervical exam, speculum exams, ultrasounds, etc.
Labor and Delivery Triage is also where you will report if you OB provider schedules you for sequential
blood pressure checks, and it is also where we do pre-op encounters the day before scheduled cesarean
sections.
For more information on when you should come into triage, please review our guidance for preterm
patients from 20 to 36+6 weeks, and another for term patients 37 weeks and greater.
Martin Army delivers infants 35 weeks gestation and greater. We do not have a Neonatal intensive care
unit here in the hospital, which means the safest choice may be transfer to another hospital Columbus if
we anticipate a preterm delivery.
3) Admission and Induction of Labor

There are many reasons you may be admitted to labor and delivery; the most common reasons are for
active labor, if your water breaks, or if your provider recommends an induction of labor. Often the
conversation about an induction will start in the OB clinic during one of your scheduled appointments.
You may be given a date and put on our induction schedule- it’s important to keep in mind that this date
and time is not a hard and fast appointment. We cannot project how full our labor rooms will be on your
given day, we ask you to be prepared but also be patient with us and stay flexible on timing. Added
below this video is our induction instruction sheet which includes when and where to call to the
morning or evening of your scheduled induction for confirmation of room availability.
4) Labor/Delivery and Recovery

Once you are admitted to labor and delivery in active labor or for an induction of labor, our team of
labor and delivery nurses, family medicine residents, and OB providers and midwives will develop a plan
of care specific to your situation and needs. This is a great time to have your birth preference sheets
from your 32 or 36 week appointments readily available for us to review. We do have twenty four hours,
seven day a week in house coverage from anesthesia in case your birth preferences do involve an
epidural, and we also have 24/7 in house OB coverage in case an urgent or emergent cesarean section is
needed.

MACH has 5 spacious labor rooms all with beautiful views of the rolling Georgia hills. Our facilities are
not equipped to accommodate hydrotherapy in a tub, but each private room as it’s own bathroom with
a shower with a detachable showerhead and space for a birth ball for hydrotherapy.

Each room also is outfitted with an infant warmer if resuscitation is needed for baby. Both wired and
wireless fetal monitoring available depending on your situation. We also have a variety of birth
positioning options including birthing balls, peanut balls, hard and inflatable birth stools. We also offer
squatting bars that attach to our labor beds and we do have a pushing mirror available if that is your
preference. There are multiple lighting arrangements available for overhead lighting, and our hospital
cable service does have a relaxation channel that offers calming music and visuals. If your birth
preferences include something you do not see here, such as aromatherapy or massage tools, please feel
free to pack them in your hospital bag and we will do our best to assist.
After delivery, expect to stay with us in your room for approximately two hours before we transfer both
you and baby to continue your recovery on the Mother Baby Unit.
We do our very best to keep visitation and mask wearing as open as possible during your labor
experience, but we are subject to national, local, and post wide infection risk guidelines. For the most up

5) Cesarean Section

Whether your cesarean section is planned or unplanned, we are here to take care of you! Planned
cesarean sections start in the clinic when your provider will discuss scheduling your case. Unplanned
cesarean sections follow much the same process as we will discuss here except for pre-op process which
is much shorter.
The day before your scheduled procedure you will report to labor and delivery triage for pre-op labs and
consent forms with our anesthesia providers. We will give you a Cesarean Section instruction sheet,
which we will also link below this video for awareness. The morning of your surgery you will call labor
and delivery at approximately 0500 to confirm your surgical time and be prepared to arrive at labor and
delivery triage between 0500-0530 to finish your pre-op requirements. We work a little differently than
a normal operating room schedule because your same labor and delivery team is also caring for any
scheduled or unscheduled labor patients we have. Bearing that in mind, we cannot project how full our
labor rooms will be on your given day, we ask you to be prepared but also be patient with us and stay
flexible on timing.

When it’s time for your surgery, you will be escorted from L&D triage to our operating room. We have
operating rooms on both the 5 th floor and the 2n d floor in the main OR, either way your team will escort
you to the correct area and get you set up for your spinal. During the spinal placement we will have your
support person wait outside until your catheter is inserted, your skin is prepped, the surgical drapes are
up, and your surgeon confirms you are numbed adequately for the surgery to start. We can support
having one support person in the OR with you during most cases, unless the cesarean section must be
done under General Anesthesia then your support person will wait for you in the recovery area. When
baby is born, we provide initial resuscitation in the room if needed and then get baby over to you and
your support person as soon as possible.

From the OR we will move you and baby to your PACU area for the initial surgical recovery. That
recovery period can vary widely on your needs, but a good average is anywhere from 1-2 hours before
we transfer you and baby to continue your recovery on the Mother Baby unit.
