The Christian County Military Affairs committee hosted the Military Affairs Committee Chili Cook off at the Hopkinsville Farmers Market, Hopkinsville, Ky., Sept. 19, 2023.

Teams representing local businesses and city and county government organizations competed in the event. Teams started cooking at 11:45 a.m., and had until 4:45 p.m. to complete their chili to be presented to a panel of judges.

The Christian Country Military Affairs Committee held the event to bring the Christian County and Fort Campbell communities together.

“The chili cook off is an event that we have been doing for probably 25 years,” said Douglas Craddock, coordinator of the chili cook off for the Hopkinsville Military Affairs Committee. “We let the military know because we want them to come up and visit Hopkinsville because it’s just a great place.”

After the chili cook off was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic shutdowns, the committee has focused on building the event back in popularity by working with the Christian County Community and local businesses to organize and sponsor the event.

“Each year we try to team up with something the city is doing because it gives us the synergy of them helping with things and bringing vendors in,” said Craddock. “Our part is to organize the chili portion and get the word out to the military.”

At 5:00 p.m. the event was made open to the public. The Sounds of Six, a local rock band, played while Christian County residents sampled chili and cornbread from the competitors. Admission was free for all active duty military personnel, their families and veterans.

At 7:00 p.m. the judges announced their decision. The team representing University Heights Academy won first place, with the Hopkinsville Walmart Distribution Center taking second place, and the Hopkinsville Fire Department coming in third.

The chili cook off is one of many events that the Military Affairs Committee holds every year as part of their commitment to helping Fort Campbell soldiers feel welcome in Christian County.

The military affairs committee is really about community,” said Lane Shannon, the director of the Hopkinsville Military Affairs Committee. “It’s about supporting the troops on Fort Campbell and connecting them to the resources here in Christian County, Hopkinsville and Oak Grove.”
