Serving in the Navy for more than 20 years, there is a high chance that one would get the opportunity to experience multiple deployments. For Senior Chief Quartermaster Joshua Orbich, the assistant navigator aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5), this revelation is a reality as he is now embarking on his 10th deployment in his 24 years of naval service.
However, this one in particular is unique for Orbich as he is afforded the opportunity to deploy and serve alongside his son, Meteorological Oceanographic Analyst Forecaster Cpl. Jordan Joseph Orbich, assigned to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit Special Operations Capable.
“I’m looking forward to experiencing a deployment with my son,” said Joshua Orbich. “I was going to retire, but chose not to.”
Growing up, there were times where Jordan was able to visit a ship with his dad.
Now as an adult, serving in his own capacity, he finds himself in a surreal moment with his father attached to the same ship during his first deployment.
“We found out we both were going to be on the same ship around October 2022,” said Jordan Orbich. “My dad used to take me to work and navigation briefs all the time when I was younger. Now I go to these briefs specifically because of my job. I never thought I would be in this position.”
Having gained a great deal of experience being deployed throughout his naval career, Senior Orbich knows the ins and outs of how to navigate a deployment. Being in the same vicinity as his son, he feels the wisdom he can impart is substantial.
“It is basic, but I tell him to show up on time, do what you are told and be responsible in foreign countries,” Joshua Orbich said. “Just do the best you can do.”
Independent of his father, Jordan Orbich has his own goals and aspirations for this deployment.
“It is cool being able to talk to my dad whenever, but boundaries are important as well,” said Jordan Orbich. “I am looking for real world experience, working on my military operational specialty qualifications, and trying to be a better Marine for myself, and the people around me. My father always talked about his deployments and that played a role in me wanting to join the military. I have always wanted to help support and visit other countries on a ship.”
