KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – Soldiers from 510th Regional Support Group stood alongside local community leaders, families and friends to witness a change of command ceremony marking the appointment of their new commander for the unit.
Colonel Daniel Meyers assumed his duties as the commander on September 9, receiving the organizational colors from the outgoing commander, Colonel Dean Roberts, at a ceremony on NCO Field at 7th Mission Support Command’s Daenner Kaserne headquarters. The ceremony was attended by senior leaders from 7th Mission Support Command, U.S. Army Europe and Africa, and the U.S. Army Reserve, along with representatives from the German Armed Forces and local community leaders.
Roberts, who commanded the Regional Support Group since October 2021, presided over several opportunities that solidified the unit as a well-trained and forward institution, to include support for U.S. Army Europe and Africa’s DEFENDER-Europe 2022 in Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania; DEFENDER-Europe 2023 in Spain, Latvia and Estonia; improved collaboration with NATO Allies and Partners; and the successful mobilization of the 446th Movement Control Battalion to Poland in support of U.S. Army Europe and Africa’s Operation European Assure, Deter and Reinforce – marking the first mobilization for a European-based, U.S. Army Reserve unit in more than a decade.
“There is no doubt that you’re exactly the right leader at the right time,” Roberts said as he addressed Meyers and recalled his time during command. “What stands before you today is a team that is exceptionally ready to conduct their wartime mission. When called upon, they do their duty and deliver beyond expectation. They are good – very good – at what they do, and trusted when the nation calls upon them in a time of crisis. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to be on their team.”
Meyers, who has more than 25 years of service and most recently served as an instructor at the Army War College, expressed his praise to Roberts for his success in fostering a climate of resiliency and a warrior’s mindset for the team at 510th Regional Support Group.
“You set a very high bar and I will continue to push this unit to meet those standards in peace and wartime missions,” Meyers said. “It is great to be back in the 7th Mission Support Command. I look forward to the coming years. Our journey together will not be easy – nothing worth while ever is – but I will serve all of you as hard as possible to make sure that you all have the opportunities to be successful.”
In closing, the commander reiterated his training philosophy for the group, expounding upon the importance of the unit to the U.S. Army Reserve and to NATO Allies and Partners
“My training philosophy is simple: If it does not kill the enemy, protect the force, or change behavior, it is a waste of resources,” Meyers said. “We are twice the citizen. Those who serve in our communities remain ready to serve our nation.”
