Marines and Sailors from Marine Corps Engineer Detachment 23.2 gathered with local community members to enjoy a mid-week meal on Peleliu, Republic of Palau Aug. 30, 2023.
“We have events like this [cookout] to give back to the Marines,” said Dr. Emias Roberts, Governor of Peleliu. “Working on big projects is important, but the small stuff like this is also necessary to form a good partnership.”
Events like these are common for Marines on the Island of Peleliu."
The community has supported, assisted and welcomed the Marines for over a year while they complete runway clearing, road restoration and many other projects to assist the residents of Peleliu.
“The community has welcomed us with open arms in their personal lives as well as their professional,” said Staff Sgt. Brandon Spivey, the Bulk Fuels Chief for MCED-P 23.2. “We work on projects like road reconstruction and runway clearing, but also incorporate community events like softball, beach clean-ups and fishing.”
This not only benefits the community but has a direct effect on the Marines and sailors forward deployed to the Indo-Pacific region.
“It’s really amazing to see two cultures work together hand in hand,” said Spivey. “The governor of Peleliu and the residents of the island have made it feel like a home away from home; that directly benefits both sides and helps morale enormously.”
Whether it’s re-grading a road or a highly competitive game of softball, you are guaranteed to see residents of Peleliu with Marines and sailors engaged in activities that strengthen the bond between the United States and its partner nation, the Republic of Palau.
“We asked for help with certain community projects, and you listened,” said Roberts. “I tell everyone we want to make this your home away from home. You have helped in so many ways and we are thankful you are here.”
