SCANIA, Iraq—Staff Sgt. Moises Becerra of Eugene, Ore., and infantryman with A Company, 2/261, 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team, grabbed his paints and brushes to create a work of art Jan. 25 at Scania, Iraq.
Becerra designed and painted the A Company T-wall mural based on Oregon, the home state for the company.
"Painting large scale is what I really love," Becerra said. "It's just a hobby."
Attending military college in Mexico City more than 20 years ago, Becerra learned the art of painting from an officer.
"I had the opportunity to meet a colonel who was a muralist," Becerra said. "He invited me to take part in a couple of murals. They are still there."
The mural Becerra painted for A Company is a postcard from Oregon. It portrays Mount Hood, a prominent mountain in Oregon. He also painted ducks and a beaver in military uniforms, the mascots for the two Oregon universities. The postcard has a Task Force Volunteer crest for a stamp and is "taped" to a vehicle.
"It is a postcard of Oregon, taped in a vehicle. It is to give you hope. When you are traveling down the road you can look at it," he said. "The stamp is for the postcard."
The mural stands out colorfully in the midst of the base where many people can view it.
"People who have never been to Oregon see the mural and say, 'Now, I want to go,'" Becerra said.
Becerra said he had help from other Soldiers but they give him all the credit.
Spc. Joshua Francis of Springfield, Ore., and medic for A Company said, "Sgt. Becerra is awesome."
