GERONIMO! GERONIMO!
When you hear "Geronimo" at Camp Buehring. Kuwait, it brings alertness, discipline, and preparedness across the entire base. Every training exercise that the military conducts will always have its challenges, but in turn, it ensures that the service members develop mentally and physically.
Soldiers all across the Area Support Group at Camp Buehring, Kuwait, participated in the GERONIMO exercise. It requires all quick-reaction forces, including the military police, the base fire department, medical personnel and more to respond to a mock base attack. Not only does this bring awareness to units in the event of a base attack, but it also allows all units on the base to exercise their current standard operating procedures.
Within the unit, we constantly instill and teach "accountability." During the GERONIMO exercise, accountability played a huge role in the training. Units were responsible for having a pre-planned evacuation and shelters in place in case of a base attack event. Two service members were designated to participate in a training exercise: Sgt. Adam Carr and Spc. Terence Donaldson of HHC 168th Engineer Brigade, Task Force Southern Castle. 1st Sgt. Clarence Williams, HHC 168th Engineer Brigade, Task Force Southern Castle 1st Sergeant, selected the above individuals knowing that they would meet his and Cpt. William Walker's, HHC 168th Engineer Brigade, Task Force Southern Castle Commander, intent for the movement.
This exercise requires service members to display their speed, agility, awareness, and communication skills. All are equally important for any mission's success. Williams observed Carr as he performed his pre-combat checks (PCCs) and pre-combat inspections (PCIs) to ensure that he and Donaldson were adequately prepared to execute the training according to the set standard. Donaldson took the initiative to hurry out at the beginning of the exercise and start the vehicle while Carr completed other tasks until their departure time.
Being cognizant of the time available, the service members made the best of this situation. It's not the ideal setting, but the uncomfortable environment served as a development tool for Carr and Donaldson. Force protection is a vital part of our defense and mission success. The GERONIMO exercise is a great way for Soldiers to practice the rapid, fast-paced execution of an event if it ever occurs. This served as a learning opportunity for the service members who now can pass their new found knowledge onto other service members. The Task Force Southern Castle Soldiers continue to be prepared and ready!
