V25 Participates in Intrepid Maven 23.4

CAMP Al-QUAWAYRAH, Jordan – U.S. Marines with Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, conducted squad, platoon, and bi-lateral movement drills with the Jordanian Armed Forces during exercise Intrepid Maven 23.4, July 3-13, 2023.

The drills included 81mm mortar support, M240B machine guns, M3E1 multipurpose anti-armor anti-personnel weapon systems, and ended with an urban assault.

“It’s good to get away from Camp Pendleton to some terrain we haven’t been on before. It gives the Marines a fresh look and something new for them to have to solve,” said U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Nathan Cheney, commander, Fox Company.

Staff Sgt. William McDonald, the Fox Company gunnery sergeant, stated that the squad and team leaders have greatly increased their knowledge of desert terrain tactics during the exercise.

“At our company level, I’ve noticed our squad leaders developing movement tactics through this desert terrain and utilizing the terrain to gain advantageous positions on our enemy. They’ve also extended their ability to clear towns and buildings at the small unit level,” said McDonald.

The ability to work in this location allowed Fox Company to conduct more realistic operations than they would be allowed to do at their home base, Camp Pendleton, California, due to safety limitations there, said McDonald.

Jordan is a leading strategic partner and major non-NATO ally for the U.S. IM 23.4 is a continuation of our resolve to address Middle East challenges through balanced and transparent military-to-military security cooperation activities.

The training alongside the JAF will provide both the U.S. and Jordan with a better understanding of how the other side operates and the opportunity to learn new tactics from each other, said McDonald.

“Any time we can get to work with them, share knowledge with them, help improve them, and give ourselves some more tools for the toolbox is great,” said McDonald.

Exercise Intrepid Maven is a U. S. Marine Corps Forces, Central Command-conceptualized and -implemented exercise series designed in late 2021, with the first iteration having occurred in Jordan in March 2022. The series, to include IM 23.4, is designed to strengthen partnerships, produce training opportunities, contribute to interoperability and improve conditions for regional security.
