U.S. Army Capt. Timothy Wright, an officer with Joint Force Headquarters in the Maryland Army National Guard, spoke passionately about the Officer Candidate School objectives, phases, and the qualities required to join.
"The primary goal of state OCS is basically to create leaders to lead," Wright explained. "We're here to create leaders for our army that have the opportunity to embark on a great indifferent journey, creating leaders that can ensure unit readiness not only to support missions within the state but also missions throughout the world at a moment's notice."
Capt. Wright expressed that there are multiple ways to commission; however, state OCS stands out as the preferred path. When asked about the key requirements for joining OCS, Wright emphasized the critical importance of displaying strong leadership or leadership qualities as one of the key prerequisites.
"In order to be a leader, you have to have those leadership qualities such as integrity, conflict resolution, and the ability to stand out while also being a good follower," he stated.
Delving into the preparation provided by the state OCS program, Capt. Wright explained its comprehensive approach. "It prepares you mentally and physically," he said. The initial phases of the program aim to break candidates out of bad habits and push them beyond their comfort zones. The intention is to cultivate personal growth and instill the understanding that officers must lead by example, motivating soldiers to follow suit.
Wright also explained the role of CADRE members within the state OCS program. "CADRE members are out here to create better leaders," he said. With officers and non-commissioned officers (NCOs) in high leadership positions, including captains, first sergeants, and staff sergeants, the CADRE ensures candidates receive guidance from experienced leaders. Even if a candidate doesn't make it through OCS, Wright underlined the long-lasting impact of the experience as well as the invaluable lessons learned from observing the CADRE's professionalism and leadership.
Wright also stressed the importance of having mental toughness. "You need to be mentally tough because they'll figure it out if you're not," he warned. Wright emphasized the CADRE's ability to recognize candidates who lack commitment and dedication early on. However, he assured that with mental fortitude, anyone can overcome challenges and succeed in the program.
Wright’s advice to those considering joining the state OCS program - "Know that you want to be here." He urged prospective candidates to have unwavering dedication and to focus on developing their leadership skills. "Work on your craft and know what you'll be doing in the future," he added, emphasizing “The significance of aiming for two ranks above you and showing gratitude to the rank below you.”
