Sailor 360 Provides a Path to Leadership

    NORFOLK, VIRGINIA, UNITED STATES

    05.10.2023

Story by Petty Officer 3rd Class Christopher Jones

    USS Bataan (LHD 5)

NORFOLK, Va. – Character, competence, and connections are three pillars of the structural foundation for Sailor 360. Modeled after previous programs such as CPO 365, Sailor 360 was designed and originated in 2018 to push for sustained growth, constant conversation, and the development of Sailors through a command managed approach, permitting U.S. Naval commands with the ability to facilitate pathways for leadership opportunities through ingenuity.
On board The Wasp-Class amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) the Sailor 360 program operates under Bataan’s Command Master Chief Jay Westmoreland’s direction.
“Bataan is prioritizing Sailor 360,” said Westmoreland. As we seek to improve and maximize the leadership skills amongst our ranks.”
Bataan’s Sailor 360 Team Coordinator Culinary Specialist 1st Class Kyle Vance feels the Sailor 360 program can prepare junior personnel as they evolve into leaders by showing them how to embody the standards set by senior leadership. On the flip side, senior leadership can learn and understand the thought process of their reliefs.
“Every opportunity is educational in this program,” said Vance. “Sailors will be better educated on how to write an evaluation, how to counsel the proper way, how to resolve conflicts, the effects of communication up and down the chain of command, and how to become better mentors.”
The Sailor 360 sessions will occur a minimum of twice a month with the ship’s Chief Petty Officer Association, First Class Petty Officer Association, Second Class Petty Officer Association, and the wardroom providing the trainings and leading the team building exercises underway and in port.
The top down approach isn’t built to make junior Sailors feel inferior, but to help them gain the tools necessary to properly flourish in a naval environment, Vance explained.
“Junior leaders would have way more knowledge about how to navigate certain facets of the Navy, that someone like myself or any other senior leader did not have the chance to learn at such a young stage of their careers,” said Vance. “Instead of waiting for a Sailor to become an E-6, why not empower them to be better suited for anchors or a commissioning program while you still have their attention as junior Sailors?”
Aiming to be readily available, Bataan’s Sailor 360 core wants to create an authentic space where Sailors can participate, invest their time and build the rapport that is needed to drive the program’s sustainability.
“We have been told various times in our naval career to train our reliefs, or pay attention to our senior leaders, pick up their good traits and become better,” Vance said. “Sailor 360 plays a part in bridging that gap and making successful and skilled Sailors at every level.”
