NEWPORT, R.I. – The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport’s workforce continues to maintain the highest level of service to the fleet, and those efforts are highlighted in the command’s 2022 Annual Overview.
Each year, the Strategic Planning Office and the Public Affairs Office collaborate to gather stories and photos to capture a year in the life at Division Newport.
Commanding Officer Capt. Chad Hennings and former Technical Director Ron Vien, who retired on March 31, introduced the report by highlighting Division Newport’s important work.
“As our nation relies more on our Navy’s submarine fleet, the demand for our products and services has increased; the Division Newport workforce understands this urgency and importance and is poised to meet those demands as the Navy’s technical stewards of the undersea domain,” Vien and Hennings wrote.
“Much of the work we perform throughout our technical departments exceeds the classification of this document but in these pages you will see how, as a command, we provided expert, efficient support to the U.S. Navy, celebrated each other’s accomplishments, shared our work with a high-level visitors, and embraced diversity within our workforce.”
This 40-page Distribution A document provides a high-level view of some of the people, projects, and events that have contributed to the command’s success. The document is also archived as part of the Naval History and Heritage Command.
“The Annual Overview is a way to capture all the good we’ve done over the last year,” Mark Dalton, head of the Strategic Planning Office, said. “It’s an opportunity to take a breath, look back, and see what the organization at large has accomplished in 2022.”
These accomplishments included key program milestones for the Razorback and Snakehead unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), as well as support of major Navy exercises. These included the Valiant Shield 2022 Sink Exercise (SINKEX), Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2022 and Ice Exercise (ICEX).
The overview also highlights visitors, special events, innovations, 2022’s “What We Do Matters” campaign, business metrics and economic impact data.
“This report highlights that what we do as workforce really matters to the submarine fleet and the U.S. Navy,” Jeffrey Prater, director of Corporate Communications, said. “Our efforts also have a major impact on local and state economies.”
In 2022, Division Newport totaled funding reached $1.5 billion.
“NUWC Division Newport is and always has been at the forefront of undersea technology and we answer the call to deliver solutions and capabilities to the submarine fleet,” the report states. “We will make impressive strides to realizing our vision of Undersea Superiority: Today and Tomorrow. This is not a finite task. There’s always more work to be done and our workforce is our greatest advantage.”
NUWC Newport is the oldest warfare center in the country, tracing its heritage to the Naval Torpedo Station established on Goat Island in Newport Harbor in 1869. Commanded by Capt. Chad Hennings, NUWC Newport maintains major detachments in West Palm Beach, Florida, and Andros Island in the Bahamas, as well as test facilities at Seneca Lake and Fisher's Island, New York, Leesburg, Florida, and Dodge Pond, Connecticut.
