Multiyear Utility Project Saves Millions, Enhances Installation Security
MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. (June 14, 2023) — The conclusion of the $47.6 million utility project at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point is here and already is projecting savings of more than $2 million, 12 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and 128 million gallons of water, annually.
The utility energy services contract (UESC) that was awarded in April 2020 was given a certificate of substantial completion in April 2023 and the nod of final acceptance, effectively improving MCAS Cherry Point’s energy security status.
The project modernized and standardized a range of equipment and facilities with efficient and secure systems. The work focused on five Energy Conservation Measures (ECM), which were improvements in the areas of lighting, water, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, controls, and electrical upgrades.
The improvements netted a significant reduction of the air station’s energy requirements by several megawatts, simultaneously offering quality-of-life gains in the form of improved light quality for residents near the air station’s sports fields.
The work also improved how the installation uses water in its wastewater treatment facility, making use of reclaimed water and reducing the requirement for domestic, potable water by about 50 million gallons per year.
Additional improvements significantly reduced maintenance and monitoring requirements for critical utility functions, upgrading or replacing aging equipment, and improving efficiency and reliability of building environmental systems.
