NEWARK, N.J. – Marine Corps Recruiting Command partnered with USA Wrestling to host the 2023 Summer Silver Coaches College in Newark, New Jersey.
The event allowed coaches from around the country, including 40 local and regional coaches from the tri-state area, to participate in five coaching seminars ranging from wrestling safety to women in coaching to diversity, equality and inclusion leadership. The seminars were led by Marines and coaches from the USAW national team who shared their expertise and insights with the coaches.
“I’m hoping these coaches got a lot of good lessons in leadership out of this,” said Dremann, commanding officer, 4th Marine Corps District, and a former wrestler. “Coaches are important figures in these kids and young adults’ lives, and have an important part in shaping who they become.”
The partnership and shared values between USAW and the Marine Corps aim to increase awareness of the Marine Corps among educators and coaches. By engaging these influencers, the Marine Corps hopes to inspire more young people to consider a career in the Marine Corps and to promote the values of discipline, leadership, and teamwork.
“I think the partnership that the Marine Corps and USAW has is extremely beneficial to each other because both organizations have similarities,” said Vance Cornelison, a Marine veteran and a wrestling coach at Little Rock Catholic High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. “In the Marine Corps, every Marine is a rifleman and is ready for combat and as a wrestler as soon as you step in that ring you need to be ready for combat. I found the class with Col. Dremann to be very insightful and helpful as to how to get me athletes better prepared to make good decisions while in that combat mindset.”
Dremann spoke to the coaches on the first day of the classes about leadership and the traits needed to be a good coach. During the address, Dremann elaborated on real-life experiences he had been put in as a leader, and how he learned from those experiences. He also took questions from the coaches about his time in the Marine Corps, and how he applied his leadership skills to those experiences. At the end of his class, Dremann talked about the importance of the Marine Corps partnership with USAW, how wrestlers make great Marines and how the coaches are an important building block to not just making great Marines, but great young adults as well.
“This partnership is a learning experience for both organizations. It’s emphasizing coaching and leadership all in one”, Said Capt. Terrence Zaleski the marketing and communications officer for 4th Marine Corps District. “This allows us to focus on teaching how to mentor and lead our athletes and junior Marines to become quality Marines and quality citizens as well as their best selves.”
The 2023 Summer Silver Coaches College was a valuable opportunity for coaches to learn from experts in their sport, and gave the attending Marines a chance to socialize with the coaches. They can then promote the values of discipline, leadership, and teamwork, allowing the coaches to inspire their athletes and present the Marine Corps as a viable career path.
The next event that the Marine Corps will partner with the USAW will be from the 15 to the 22 of July in Fargo, North Dakota, for the Marine Corps Junior and 16U National Championships. The National Partnership Program serves to engage coaches in increasing awareness of the Marine Corps, while also sharing the history and their proud traditions. The NPP increases awareness of the opportunities the Marine Corps can present to those who join.
