U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Evan Brown, originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, joined the Coast Guard in 2019. He now serves as an electrician’s mate (EM) on the USCGC Sycamore (WLB 209).

“I originally learned about the Coast Guard through a family friend who served,” said Brown. “I wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement and search and rescue, and the Coast Guard fit that description. I wanted to set myself up for the future and get some real-life experience. The responsibility that the Coast Guard gives you is not like other jobs; you get immediate responsibility as a non-rate or a Petty Officer 3rd Class.”

After going through boot camp in September 2019, Brown was assigned as a Seaman to USCGC Thetis (WMEC 910). After attending EM “A” School, Brown received orders to USCGC Bristol Bay (WTGB 102) in the Great Lakes, his first assignment as a rated petty officer. After serving aboard the Bristol Bay for a little over a year, Brown advanced to Petty Officer 2nd Class and arrived on the Sycamore in 2022.

Brown plays a critical role in ensuring the cutter's safe operation and mission readiness.

“Part of my daily duties include troubleshooting engineering systems, power and lighting, and standing various watches,” said Brown. “I believe that anybody can turn a wrench, but it takes skill to identify and solve electrical problems by putting together the puzzle pieces to find and solve an electrical problem.”

He emphasized the importance of continuously improving his technical proficiency and guiding his subordinates.

“You have to be proficient in reading through manuals and drawings to identify places where things have gone wrong in the systems,” said Brown. “Having a full understanding of all the systems is critical to effectively troubleshooting where potential problems may occur.”

Looking ahead, Brown is excited about the opportunities for personal growth and professional growth.

“One of my goals is to become a master Cutterman,” said Brown. “I also want to eventually make Chief Warrant Officer and hold the title of Engineering Petty Officer.”
