FORT LIBERTY NC. --Womack Army Medical Center Graduate Medical Education (GME) Program held a commencement ceremony at the All-American Chapel on Fort Liberty, after the Fort Bragg redesignation ceremony June 2.
The graduates completed their training through the different residencies and internship programs at WAMC, to include: WAMC Family Medicine Residency, with eight graduating residents; Gynecologic Surgery and Obstetrics Residency, with three graduates; Family Medicine Hospitalist Fellowship, two graduates; Primary Eye Care Optometry Residency, one graduate; Pharmacy Residency, one graduate; Social Work Internship, two graduates , Baylor Graduate Program in Healthcare Administration, one graduate; U.S. Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing, two graduates and Army Nurse Corps, Brig. Gen. (Ret) Anna Mae Hayes, Clinical Nurse Transition Program, six graduates.
“Just make it better, that’s my charge to you,” said 1 st Special Forces Command Surgeon, Col. Jamie C. Riesberg, keynote speaker. “Always carry a blade. Why, why would you always carry a blade? To remind yourself that you are a Soldier in the United States Army. To remind yourself every day in the midst of patient charting and medical records and all the things that consume our focus.
“When you feel that knife in your pocket, remember, that you have entered the sacred profession of serving those who go in harm’s way. The profession of arms. That's your overall greatest responsibility, to put combat power back in the hands of that commander. The Army Medical Department exists for one reason and that is to provide the Commander combat power.”
In Riesberg’s address he reminded graduates that there is healing in their profession and there is healing in their hands.
“Don’t forget when you’re deployed this is your 10-digit, CT scan,” said Reisberg. “So, I challenge, use your 10-digit CT scan, because when you deploy, this maybe all you have.”
Riesberg ended his address by thanking the families for being the graduates support network and serving our nation.
“Just because you're not wearing a uniform, does not take anything away from the sacrifice, you make, as a family,” said Riesberg.
Director of Medical Education and Research, Lt. Col. Wendra Galfand, recognized the program directors for their commitment to the highest education standards.
Following the presentation of certificates, Col. Hugh Mclean Jr. WAMC deputy commanding officer, delivered the closing remarks.
“Take the lessons you have learned from your directors, from each other, and from this pandemic and continue to provide the best care, for our Soldiers, our families and our veterans,” said McLean.
The WAMC GME program mission is to develop fully competent military medical providers who are committed to improving health and building readiness for their patients, their families and their communities at home and on the battlefield.
