2nd Marine Logistics Group Conducts Logistics Staff Training Exercise 2-23

    TWENTYNINE PALMS, CA, UNITED STATES

Story by 1st Lt. Nicole McDougall

    2nd Marine Logistics Group

MARINE CORPS LOGISTICS OPERATIONS GROUP, TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. – U.S. Marines and Sailors from 2nd Marine Logistics Group, Combat Logistics Regiment 2 (CLR 2), and Combat Logistics Regiment 4 (CLR 4) conducted Logistics Staff Training Exercise (LSTX) 2-23 from 8-19 May, 2023.

LSTX 2-23 was designed to test 2nd MLG’s command and control over their subordinate units using a realistic, scenario-based training environment. Staff from Marine Corps Logistics Operations Group (MCLOG) evaluated 2nd MLG’s combat operations center, as well as its staff processes and procedures to command and control logistics operations. Typically, LSTX is run at the regimental level, however this iteration was adapted to support a group-level staff for the first time.

The exercise began with one week of scenario-based logistics planning, followed by one week of execution. During execution week, Marine Logistics Operations Group (MCLOG) provided a training environment that included injects designed to challenge 2nd MLG’s ability to sustain a Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) in a contested environment.

Force Design 2030 concepts such as naval integration and distributed maritime operations were integrated into the planning and execution of the exercise. “Force Design 2030 doesn’t change how we command and control our units,” said Col. Erin McHale, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, Assistant Chief of Staff, G-3, Operations Officer, “but we incorporated new battalions and multimodal supply and distribution webs into our planning.”

The supported forces in this scenario were much lighter and more distributed, which required the MLG and regiments to find innovative solutions while working with limited resources and capabilities. Planners identified and tested the use of littoral transfer points, among other methods, to push supplies further into the simulated battlefield.

CLR 4 provided additional insight in the exercise, taking on the role of Combat Logistics Regiment 27. “The benefit of having CLR 4 here is two-fold – it fosters our integration with our reserve counterparts, and provides a true test into the effectiveness of our processes and procedures,” McHale continued. “If an outside regiment can step in and understand how we operate, then we know we’re being effective as a higher headquarters.”

The inclusion of Force Design 2030 concepts allowed the staff to identify any sustainment gaps and apply mitigation measures needed to support a future fight. Upon the conclusion of the exercise, 2nd MLG staff were able to take the lessons learned from the exercise and improve upon their ability to provide support to II MEF across all domains.
