EBBING AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, FORT SMITH, Ark. - The 188th Wing conducted a formal change of command ceremony, May 7, 2023 as Col. Troy D. Howerton took command of the 188th Mission Support Group. The change of command ceremony was preceded by Col. Howerton's promotion to the rank of Colonel.
“You are taking over a great group,” said Col. Dylan R. Patterson, the previous commander of the 188th MSG, during the ceremony. “You are the right leader at the right time. The diversity of your background and your experiences really help in times like this where everything is changing.”
Howerton enlisted at the 188th in 1988 and received his commission as an officer in 1995. He started in the 188th Medical Group as a member of the nurse corps. He went on to serve as the 188th Security Forces Squadron commander, Senior Intelligence Officer for the 188th Operations Support Squadron, plus other vital roles in the 188th during Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
“We have many challenges ahead of us that we will meet head-on and overcome,” said Col. Howerton after taking command. “The world is changing and our mission sets have global implications and the National Defense Strategy outlines our priorities for defending the homeland.”
