Adapting for the Future – Contingency Training at Laughlin

LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Airmen from the 47th Mission Support Group (MSG) participated in contingency training exercises at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, on April 23, 2023. The training was part of an ongoing effort to better align force readiness across the MSG in preparation for any contingency-related response.
With the implementation of Air Force Generation, or AFFORGEN, and the Multi-Capable Airman concept, the exercise sought to provide those involved with a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities in a contingency-related environment. All MSG units have career-field specific contingency readiness requirements, and each iteration of this training helps improve every Airman’s capabilities.
"The Air Force is fundamentally changing how we train, posture, and deploy forces," said Col. Matthew Altman, 47th MSG commander. "That culture change is predicated on Airmen developing a core set of cross-functional capabilities that increase our readiness for the complex future fight. We took a solid step in the right direction today."
The training, led by the 47th Security Force Squadron. focused on incorporating basic base defense techniques that would be needed to secure the base, such as securing the base perimeter, fields of fire, Humvee familiarization, tactical combat casualty care (TCCC), and essential weapons handling. These lessons culminated in a simulated 10-15 person patrol where participants were tested on their comprehension and applicability of the training and tasked to respond to simulated hostile fire.
"My favorite part was being put to the test with my team and applying everything we learned in the preparation stages," said Airman 1st Class Jimmy Villanueva, 47th Communications Squadron cyber network operator. "In the heat of the moment, we were challenged to deescalate a situation and devise a solution on our own with what we learned. I can't wait for the next training."
The periodic exercise aims to include a comprehensive range of scenarios. In a previous training cycle, participants trained in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) procedures, inserting an IV during a firefight, and weapons familiarization.
"Events like this provide a great reminder of why we wear the uniform," said Altman. "I am extremely proud of the Team XL warriors who orchestrated and engaged in this valuable training today."
