YOKOSUKA, Japan (December 20, 2022) - With the holidays quickly approaching, Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka’s (CFAY) Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) hosted the annual Festival of Trees December 17th and 18th at the C2 Auditorium.

“The participants and MWR staff took great pride in putting the trees and decorations together over the course of the week,” said Natasha McNair, event coordinator for CFAY MWR. “The amount of detail and care that went into it all really shows how important creating a sense of familiarity and inclusion is to everyone here on CFAY.”

The event was open to all hands and began early each morning for open viewing and voting. Various commands, associations and departments across the installation put together a wide variety of uniquely designed and decorated trees for the event. Community members were then encouraged to vote for their favorite Christmas tree.

Santa Claus even made an appearance, taking photos while his little helpers passed out cookies and hot chocolate. Music added ambience to the event provided by the Ikego Elementary School choir and a guest pianist who played throughout the weekend.

The event held special significance for the Sailors assigned to the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and their families, as Reagan’s recent return from deployment came just in time for the holiday season.

“I’m so happy we got the opportunity to come back in time to share this with our loved ones,” said Chief Logistics Specialist Nicholas Kankam, assigned to Reagan. “Me, my wife and my children are all so happy to be able to attend this event together.”

At the end of each evening, a nighttime illumination showed off the wonderful lighting displays and beautifully decorated trees one last time. This season, MWR helped to spread the holiday spirit and showcase the hard work done by community members and commands for those in attendance.
