La Habra Heights sponsored soldiers having an impact in Afghanistan

A unit of the California Army National Guard, who are being sponsored by the Afghans that live in La Habra Heights, have been making an impact in one area of Afghanistan.

The 40th Infantry Division Agri-business Development Team, which is based in the city of Asadabad and operates throughout the mountainous Kunar province, works to strengthen the agricultural based local economy.

The ADT, which is made up of soldiers with civilian backgrounds in Agriculture and business, is led by U.S. Army Col. Eric B. Grimm.

The ADT had its first major success in early December when it initiated the Veterinary Civil Action Program. The program was responsible for inoculating some 462 head of cattle and other livestock against a variety of diseases in order to strengthen them against the harsh mountain winter.

"Healthy livestock are needed by the people in this province," said Grimm. "By making them healthier and stronger, the people have more ability to resist insurgent intimidation. Moreover, by having Afghans officials in the lead, we give the people more faith in their government, which is the key to defeating the insurgents and getting American troops home."

La Habra Heights residents have established strong ties with the ADT. In early August, the community hosted the ADT's first family support day. At the event, more than 150 soldiers and family members meet at the community center to learn about the kind of resources available to them. In addition, the community has hosted care-package stuffing parties for the ADT Family Support Group.
