The William Beaumont Army Medical Center’s Practical Nurse Course (PNC) Class 03-22 graduated on February 23, 2023, in the St. Martin’s dining room in the main hospital.

Twenty-six Soldiers were trained in diverse situations in laboratories, case studies, and clinical hours in various scenarios. After graduation, Soldiers may apply for the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) and become Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs).
The students also honed and refined their skills with almost 1,000 hours of clinical nursing preceptorship and 80 hours of transition-to-practice or on-the-job training.

“The Practical Nurse Course training consists of 54 weeks of didactic instruction and clinical rotations, both at William Beaumont and hospitals we partner with in the El Paso community. On top of learning how to administer medications and provide quality nursing care safely, they also develop critical thinking skills crucial for working as part of the healthcare team,” said Sgt.1st Class Willis Tuttle, instructor, PNC, WBAMC.
The PNC Phase I begins at the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence, Joint Base San Antonio, Texas. The Soldiers received 11 weeks of didactic study consisting of 10 examinations covering various topics such as human anatomy, physiology and medical terminology. After completing Phase I, the students transitioned to Phase II at WBAMC.

“The Practical Nursing Specialist course is unique in being the only enlisted training that results in a state board examination licensure from the Texas Board of Nursing (TBON), allowing for employment as a civilian Nurse. All other enlisted Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) in the Army are civilian certificates of training/completion and are not individually held licenses,” said Staff Sgt Nicole Figueroa, instructor, PNC, WBAMC.
Tuttle added that the class also participated in the Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) course, a first for the program. The week-long training program is a realistic introduction to trauma care and gives students a perspective on their nurse role.
“Our nursing students’ clinical rotations are the most distinguishing element of our curriculum. Our students understand the differences between the military and civilian healthcare systems due to the program’s collaboration with local hospitals. Students receive experience by learning from El Paso-area nurses,” said Tuttle.

Florence Nightingale, popularly known as “The Lady with the Lamp,” established the first nursing school in London. Florence was considered the founder of modern nursing. She would welcome new nurses into the profession with a ceremony, including lighting candles upon
