    Fuel Handler Certification Course

    FORT CAMPBELL, KENTUCKY, UNITED STATES

    03.21.2023

    Story by Spc. Zachery Blevins

    40th Public Affairs Detachment

Soldiers from the 101st Division Sustainment Brigade taught a fuel handler certification course for soldiers across Fort Campbell, Ky., from March 13 to March 16, 2023.
“This course is designed to get our fuel handlers and those who may not be fuel handlers and get them on par with the Army’s regulations and Fort Campbell’s standards,” said Staff Sgt. Daniel Nowell, fuel handler instructor, 101st DSB.
In this course, soldiers learned how refueling systems and equipment are assembled sequentially, perform quality assurance, and supply and store fuel from a variety of sources.
“The idea is to help improve safety standards within the division and make sure that our soldiers are doing the procedures correctly and that they are doing it as safely as possible,” Nowell said.
Petroleum supply specialists supply the Army with the fuel it needs to maintain a state of readiness at all times.
“You bring these soldiers into these forward support companies within these brigade combat teams and they might be one of the only two-to-three fuelers,” Nowell stated, “so they will end up in a position where they will be responsible for the accountability of anywhere from ten to twenty thousand gallons of fuel so its important that we give a fine-tuned course on how to do this stuff properly.”
Petroleum supply specialists supervise and manage the reception, storage, and shipping of bulk or packaged petroleum-based products.
“Currently in the Army, this is one of only two courses that is offered for soldiers to get a fuel handlers certification,” Nowell continued, ”it is actually something that is mandated here on Fort Campbell for a soldier to conduct fuel operations or transport fuel they first must get their fuel handlers certification.”
With the other class being in Fort Riley, N.C., this course provides Fort Campbell a way to certify soldiers with in-house training, and streamline the process rather than sending soldiers to Fort Riley.
“The most important things I learned was how to properly handle the petroleum, all of the safety preventive maintenance checks and services, and all of the vehicles we would have to operate and fuel in,” said Pfc. Erin Diaz a petroleum supply specialist with Echo Company, 21st Brigade Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.
Petroleum supply specialists oversee fuel use, dispense it to various vehicles and aircraft, and ensure it is transported and handled safely.
“Safety is my biggest takeaway from this because safety is always the most important thing,” Diaz continued, “it's the first key thing to operating any job, especially in the field.”
After completing the course soldiers will be qualified to handle and transport fuel by Fort Campbell standards.
“If I could have more classes like this to help me learn more about my job,” Diaz stated, “I’d be more than happy to attend.”
