FORT HOOD, Texas -- The Fort Hood Education Center has moved the process to request testing from standing in line to sending an email online.

As of January 2023, the center mandates that Soldiers must forward requests to apply for testing via email, instead of scheduling appointments over the phone or going to the center and often waiting in long lines to get applications processed.

“It didn’t always work for them, it didn’t always work for us,” said Jodi Arie, test control officer at the FHEC. “We’ve refined it and made it a lot simpler for (Soldiers).”

She explained that the new process informs the center of which tests the Soldier wants to take, furnishes steps to guide them through the process and provides templates for reference.

The updated method is simpler, faster and provides appointment confirmations. Rescheduling only requires an additional email, and applicants receive a response right away.

“Things are very clear, concise and consistent,” Arie affirmed.

Soldiers are required to submit DA form 4187, which is required for testing and determines eligibility.

One of the main issues with the previous process was Soldiers coming in with incorrect documentation, explained Sheri Buono, education service officer at the FHEC. Now, forms are checked for accuracy and Soldiers are notified by email if revisions or additional paperwork are needed before an appointment is scheduled.

“Without this process in place, (Soldiers) would walk through the door with a DA 4187, but we would often find that it was incorrect, things were not signed, things weren’t checked properly and we would have to turn them away,” Buono expressed. “So, it’s making it customer friendly.”

Buono added that the new method also protects Soldiers’ information, promotes communication and enhances customer service.

“It’s definitely making it easier for us behind the scenes, but we also want it to be easier for the Soldiers,” she said. “While we were meeting Soldiers’ needs before, I think we’re able to meet their needs a little bit better.”

The FHEC administers a variety of testing including: the Armed Forces Classification Test for Soldiers desiring to improve their enlistment Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery or previous AFCT scores; the Defense Language Aptitude Battery to determine language aptitude for Soldiers applying for language training and certain military occupational specialties; the Defense Language Proficiency Tests to evaluate language proficiency or add a language Identifier to a Soldier’s MOS; the Oral Proficiency Interview, an interview given electronically by a Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center approved interviewer when there is no DLPT available; Selection Instrument for Flight Training to select Soldiers for aviation training; and Testing Adult Basic Education which is the most comprehensive and reliable academic assessment evaluating adult learners’ skills and knowledge.

Soldiers can email testing applications to usarmy.hood.id-readiness.mbx.dhr-esd-testing-bsep@army.mil
