The Director’s Quality and Patient Safety Grand Rounds were held on Tuesday 28 February 2023 in Clark Auditorium at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), Bethesda, Maryland. The Department of Simulation lead by Dr. Jennifer C. Geracht gave a hands-on demonstration of how simulations can help prepare healthcare professionals for any situation they may encounter in their daily activities.
Simulation is a training and feedback method in which learners practice tasks and processes in lifelike circumstances using models or virtual reality, with feedback from observers, peers, actor-patients, and video cameras to facilitate improvement in skills. Medical simulation is a cross-disciplinary effort that brings together physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals across a variety of disciplines with computer scientists, researchers, educators, and human factors engineers.
The Department of Simulation is the military academic health center model for advanced healthcare education using multimodal simulation technologies. In addition to providing a simulated hospital environment for practicing lifelike circumstances, the department has also provided code team training such as mass casualty exercises. Its goal is to advance patient care and readiness through innovative healthcare simulation, lead national and military efforts, develop multidisciplinary talent, and disseminate scholarly works.
