SOUTHWEST ASIA -- At any deployed location, contractors work with vendors to get services and supplies to support their deployed unit. However, once that is set up, someone has to pay those vendors.
That's where Staff Sgt. Zully Renon, accounting technician with the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing financial management office, comes in at her deployed location at a non-disclosed base in Southwest Asia. Renon, deployed from the 56th Comptroller Squadron at Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., ensures local vendors are being paid for the services they provide to the base.
"I am also the certifier of funds for any new requirements that may be approved for the base," Renon said. "For example, those requirements could include dormitory renovations, construction projects or custodial service contracts. I also assist travelers with their accrual vouchers and provide assistance with the Defense Travel System."
A native of Makakilo, Hawaii, Renon is deployed to a wing that is supporting Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom and the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa. She said the deployment has its challenges every day, but she knows she is helping with the success of the overall mission.
"If I did not feel confident doing my job, the hesitation would delay payments to local vendors, which in turn, would cause loss of trust from our local supporters," Renon said. "Therefore, it is very crucial to know my job and even kick it up a notch and take initiative to become even more proficient in my capabilities while I am here."
The staff sergeant and five year Air Force veteran also said she most enjoys helping deployed members with their pay issues because she knows that affects the deployed members, but also their families back home.
"When it comes to helping the deployed members with their travel issues, for example, it makes me feel like I am helping keep the stress level down," Renon said. "Who wants to have money stressors added to everything else they have to deal with while being deployed? It's always nice knowing I helped, even if it's just one person in a day. That gives me a great sense of accomplishment knowing I was helpful to a wingman."
Renon said she loves her job and she is very proud to be an Airman. "There is nothing greater than knowing that I work for the Air Force," she said.
Being on her first deployment, Renon said the experience has been a blessing in disguise.
"Even though it has been stressful and tiring at times, I have really enjoyed the learning experience," Renon said. "Knowing that I am actually playing a part in the international fight against terrorism has given me a greater appreciation for what I do."
The 380th AEW is comprised of four groups and 12 squadrons and the wing's deployed mission includes air refueling, surveillance and reconnaissance in support of overseas contingency operations in Southwest Asia
